Climbing new heights: Alysia Rigg’s inspiring apprenticeship journey from qualification to degree

At Walker Sime, we don’t just believe in apprenticeships—we champion them. They’re not just about learning on the job; they’re about shaping the future of the industry, one ambitious apprentice at a time. Our apprentices don’t make the tea (unless they want one); they’re out there gaining real-world experience, making a real impact, and proving that titles don’t define talent—hard work, passion and a cracking skillset do.
This National Apprenticeship Week, we caught up with Alysia Rigg, Trainee Project Manager at Walker Sime, to chat about her journey so far—from taking her first steps in the industry to preparing for her degree.
Q: Alysia, can you walk us through your apprenticeship journey so far and what you’ve learned during your first qualification?
Honestly, it’s been an amazing ride! I’ve been lucky enough to work on a variety of live projects, taking what I learn at university and putting it straight into practice. My HNC (Higher National Certificate) gave me a brilliant foundation—from understanding on-site construction techniques to project management and consultancy work. It’s like unlocking new levels in a game, where each project teaches me something new and valuable.
Q: What’s been the most rewarding part of your apprenticeship experience so far?
Seeing how the projects we work on change people’s lives. It’s not just about bricks and mortar; it’s about creating spaces that matter. Whether it’s improving NHS facilities for staff and patients or developing youth spaces that give kids somewhere to thrive, knowing my work plays a part in that is incredibly rewarding. It’s like being a behind-the-scenes superhero of the built environment!
Q: How has the support from Walker Sime contributed to your success?
Walker Sime has been a game-changer. From the get-go, I’ve been surrounded by experienced mentors who genuinely care and take the time to share their knowledge. But what’s been even better? The trust they’ve given me. I’ve been handed real responsibilities, not just small tasks, so I’ve had the chance to problem-solve, lead, and make decisions. That level of support and belief in me has been huge for my confidence and development.
Q: What are you looking forward to most as you begin your degree this September?
I’m buzzing to get started! This next stage is all about diving deeper into construction management, getting stuck into the nitty-gritty of contracts, procurement, risk, and stakeholder engagement. Basically, levelling up my skills even further so I can bring more to the table. And, of course, applying all that knowledge to real-life projects—that’s what makes apprenticeships so valuable.
Q: What advice would you give to someone thinking about starting an apprenticeship?
Do it! 100%—no hesitation. Apprenticeships give you the best of both worlds—learning while getting hands-on experience. You’re earning, learning, and building a career all at once. Sure, balancing work, university, and a social life can be a challenge at times, but the payoff is massive. When you graduate, you’ve already got five years of real industry experience, which puts you miles ahead of someone coming straight from uni. It’s a no-brainer!
Walker Sime: a place to grow, learn, and make an impact
Walker Sime doesn’t just hire apprentices—we back them all the way. They’re not stuck in the background; they’re right in the thick of it, gaining real experience, taking on real responsibilities, and making real change. Alysia’s journey shows the incredible things that happen when talent is paired with a supportive environment.
As Caz Rennie, our Director of People and Culture, puts it:
“We believe in fostering an environment where everyone has the opportunity to thrive. Apprentices like Alysia inspire us all with their dedication and drive, and it’s a privilege to be a part of their journey. We’re committed to nurturing talent and empowering the next generation of construction professionals.”
This National Apprenticeship Week, we’re celebrating the apprentices who bring skill, ambition, and fresh ideas to the industry. The future of construction is in very good hands—and we’re proud to be part of it.
