Birkenhead’s Regeneration; We’re Playing Our Part

The latest phase in the regeneration of Birkenhead is underway as two major highway improvement schemes begin. The Birkenhead 2040 Framework is a 20-year plan to transform the town and with a game changing program of works, with eight catalyst projects identified as critical to the Framework’s success. Walker Sime is delivering as Project Managers, Quantity Surveyors, Project Monitor, Employers Agent for Wirral Council, we are proud to continue our role as consultants in the transformative journey of this historic town.

The new highway & public realm improvement projects in Birkenhead town centre (Grange Road & Charring Cross and Europa Boulevard & Conway Street)  mark a significant milestone in the ongoing work to enhance the area’s infrastructure. These upgrades are designed to improve the town’s attractiveness, accessibility, and safety for all road users, including pedestrians and cyclists.

Funded from a variety of sources, including the UK government’s Future High Street Fund (FHSF), Levelling Up Funding, CRSTS 1 and Active Travel England to name just a few.  The projects within the Birkenhead 2040 vision will aim to complement the wider Birkenhead regeneration plans that are already underway in the town. The revitalisation of the highways is a crucial step in creating a more connected and vibrant environment, supporting local businesses, and improving connectivity for residents.

As well as the highway improvements schemes, our specialist teams have been involved in other key regeneration projects in Birkenhead 2040 Framework. One of which is the construction of the new Wirral Council Offices, the £40 million development project.  As Project Managers and Contract Administrator, we worked closely with the Wirral Growth Company to oversee every stage of this project, from pre-construction and demolition to site enabling, construction, and aftercare. This state-of-the-art office complex is a cornerstone of Birkenhead’s economic development, providing modern facilities and fostering business growth.

We are involved in the ongoing regeneration of Dock Branch North which aims to transform the historic dock branch rail corridor into a vibrant public space. The £15m Dock Branch North project will transform a disused railway cutting into a world-class urban park, reclaiming a green corridor which will connect key areas of Birkenhead, create an active travel corridor linking Hind Street to Wirral Waters and unlock adjacent development potential in the area. This project will return an unused space back to the residents of Birkenhead and open up new possibilities for walking and cycling from North Birkenhead to Central Birkenhead and beyond.

By drawing upon the diverse skills of our team we are providing NEC4 project management, quantity surveying, Project Management and employers agent services. We manage precontract stages, tendering & procurement support, appointing contractors and pre-construction programmes right through to the post completion stage of the project.

From the meticulous pre-construction stages to the hands-on management of construction and beyond, our work not only revitalises physical spaces but also aims to blend community spirit and support sustainable development. We are honoured to have worked with Wirral Council for 3 years on the development of the Birkenhead 2040 vision and look forward to working with Wirral further to realise the ambition and strategy to change the future aspirations for Birkenhead.
